Investing in a horse is a big decision – a thorough vetting helps ensure it is the right one.

At Seven Hills Equine, we perform 2- and 5-stage examinations following BEVA guidelines, with optional imaging or blood tests where needed.

Our aim is simple – to work with you to make an informed decision, helping you purchase a horse that can safely and confidently do the job you need it to do.

Pre-Purchase Examinations

  • A Pre-Purchase Examination (PPE), often referred to as a vetting, is an essential step to help ensure your new horse is sound, healthy, and suitable for its intended purpose.

These can be supplemented with X-rays, ultrasound scans, or endoscopy when required – for example, at an insurer’s request or where the horse’s value or intended level of work justifies additional checks.

The five stages assess the horse at rest, in motion, and under exercise to identify any signs of injury, disease, or abnormality that might affect performance or future soundness. A 2-stage vetting (sometimes called a “limited examination”) includes only the first two stages and provides a basic overview for lower-risk purchases.

After the examination, the vet will discuss the findings with you and provide a written certificate and report summarising any issues that may affect the horse’s suitability. A blood sample is routinely offered and stored for six months. This can be tested if concerns later arise – for example, to detect the presence of painkillers, sedatives, or other substances that may have artificially influenced the horse’s behaviour or performance during the vetting.
